Our Guerrero Coat draws inspiration from the iconic shields or Chimalli (from the Nahuatl word for shield) used by warriors in Mexico during ancient times. These shields were traditionally crafted from ocelot skin over a base of carrizo and adorned with mosaics of jade, feathers, colorful cords, and pearls. For high-ranking individuals, they were embellished with plates made from alloys of silver and gold, along with bronze.
The shape and size of the Chimalli varied depending on the rank, type of warrior, or culture. Our coat, made of wool, features hand-embroidered shields and edges with embroidered blanket stitch on sleeves and pockets, echoing the intricacy and tradition of these emblematic pieces from Mexican history.
